Reviewer's rating:

550Access has found a place in my heart.
Howdy y'all! Couple questions to ponder: Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him on a car ride, he sticks his head out the window? Or, Why is a person that handles your money called a 'Broker'? Things that make you go, "Hmmmm..."

550Access has found a place in my heart. They're a trustworthy company who tells it like it is. If all I need is a way to read my email on yahoo, or occasionally do research on how on earth to potty train my 3 and a half year old, I'd go with this ISP.

550access
I tried to get answers to two questions via their "on line support" service. The following conversation with Henry took about 20 minutes with very long gaps where Henry remained completely silent. Henry finally simply disconnected me rather than answer the second question.
" Hello Ken ,

Below is the complete transcript of your chat session:
===
Company: VIP PowerNet
Department: 550Access
Name: Henry
Email: noresponse@noemailresponse.com
Day: Sun 10/05/03 11:21 pm
---------------------------------------------
Welcome Ken ! Please hold while we contact a representative. If a
representative does not respond in a few seconds, then he/she is not
available at this time.

"1. Can I use Outlook Express with 550 connection for e-mail? 2.
When engaged in lengthy download, do I get cut off with/without
warning?"
---------------------------------------------
** You are now speaking with Henry, 550Access. **
Ken : Great, I'm Ken
Henry : Hello!
Ken : Ditto
Henry : How can i help you
Ken : Do you see my questions above or are they just on my screen?
Henry : o.k.
Ken : "1. Can I use Outlook Express with 550 connection for e-mail?
2. When engaged in lengthy download, do I get cut off with/without
warning?"
Henry : yes you can use emails with 550 access if you have your own
email provider
Henry : You need to set your incoming and outgoing server
Ken : For example, who or what would be an "e-mail provider?
Henry : You can get emals from other companies like hotmail.com
Ken : Believe you're saying that a connection to the net via 550
access does not provide email capability...right?
Henry : yes right. we only provide basic internet service
Henry : at $ 5.5 per month
Ken : Second question: My problem at the moment is a need to do
research which sometimes requires reading documents on a web site for
maybe 30 or 40 minutes. At present I get cut off in 20 minutes .. no
warning. How about 550?
Ken : Are you there Henry?
Henry : ya
Ken : Guess you don't know the answer -- got a telephone no. for
tomorrow to find out?
Henry : we do provide phone support but it is a pay services
Ken : Okay. Are you aware of a time limit? The 150 hours / month
is much more than I need, but at times I need a solid connection.
Henry : are you getting disconnected frequently?
Ken : It can happen at 20 minute intervals if IE6 is not showing
some surfing activity. If I get disconnected during a download, I
lose the data.
Henry : There are several reasons as to why you may be cut off:
Ken : Such as?

Geez...
One mighty support, huh?
Guess, you get what you are paying for...
I used to own an ISP - not a big deal to start one, really. But the most important thing is, of course, support.
I mean, if you don't provide a telephone support, do at least e-mails or online, but DO SOMETHING - and people will keep you as a provider. From my experience even most sophisticated users have questions sometimes -- you must be there for them this way or another. Even at five bucks a month.

... Just keep wondering how people expect to be successfull running business like that.

Connection reliability:
Technical support quality:

You get what you pay for
Pros: The Price
Cons: Connections, Support, Dropped connections
I get a lot of unable to connect and dial up server is not responding error messages. Online support has seemed to disappear altogether. Every time I click on live support I get a "Leave a message" message. When I do get a hold of them they don't seem to know/care what I'm talking about. Can't wait to get DSL.
